Why the Arts Matter

As this Spring term draws to a close and the Summer term comes too quickly, I am sharing my time and brain space between the two spaces.

I’m thinking about feedback, encouragement and critique to offer my current students and at the same time, am creating a framework in which my study abroad students will be able to make the most meaning out of their photography course in Prague, Czechia.

I think often of how Prague was superficially attractive to me, as someone who had not travelled outside of the US for education or pleasure much before, and how from the first time teaching abroad in that city to this current impending trip, I have reveled in how Prague, in particular, seems to exemplify the potential of a place that acknowledges the importance of the Arts.

“Art and culture, after all, fuel our imaginations, cultivate our humanity, and allow us to see ourselves and one another.

They also have the capacity to radically shift what we believe is possible, to better the world in which we live.”
